Portrait of Mingxi Xu

Mingxi is a film and television sound editor, sound designer and field recordist working across London, Tokyo and Shenzhen. She currently works as a film sound editor at an award-winning post-production company, while continuing to design and mix independent narrative, documentary, animation and commercial projects.

She holds an MFA in Sound Design from the National Film and Television School and an MA in Sound Experience Design from the Royal College of Art.

Her approach to sound is always led by story. She is particularly interested in how ambience, spatial perspective and emotional realism can shift narrative point of view and deepen an audience’s connection with characters. Her process often combines close collaboration with directors and other departments, bespoke field recordings and a willingness to develop new workflows in response to the specific needs of each film.

Mingxi’s work has received recognition from the Cinema Audio Society, MPSE and CSMPTE. She received the 62nd Cinema Audio Society Student Recognition Award in 2025. Two animated films she worked on were shortlisted for CSMPTE Sound Academy Awards between 2024 and 2025, and El Corazón, a student film to which she contributed, was nominated for the MPSE Verna Fields Golden Reel Award in 2026. She has also worked as a sound designer and re-recording mixer on multiple award-winning films.

Alongside her film work, Mingxi has collaborated on commercial projects for Canon Europe, The Balvenie and the UK charity Beauty Bank. She is a member of the Cinema Audio Society and AMPS (the Association of Motion Picture Sound).
